That's a great suggestion. I've done that many times, found out what directories competitors are in and other sites they are linked to. Visit other blogs in your particular industry and add feedback with a link. Just do it respectfully but that is another way.

Looking at your competition is a good way -A search of who links to them, in backlink search in the google toolbar.
Then you want to be on the same pages that show up (in Google) -thats a start anyway.....
