Default Is This Redirect A Bad Idea?

I have an article on my main website that accounts for more than half of the site's traffic. The keywords for this article rank #1 in Google, so I get a lot of natural search engine traffic. The article actually has very little to do with the main topic of the website - it was just an interesting "how-to" that I put there for clients, but it has turned out to be very popular.

I want to start a new website just devoted to the article and a related service.

But I don't want to lose the traffic that goes to the existing page, or the links. I thought that I could do a redirect from the existing article URL to the new URL.

Do you see any problems in doing this? or is there a better way to do it than what I have described?
