For more complicated TCP floods we rely on traffic pattern matching and dynamic ACLs to deny attacking source hosts. In the event flood sources can't be accurately tracked a temporary rule is generated to prevent the malicious traffic from hitting your server for 5 minutes, while a NOC engineer is paged to further analyze the flows and build a custom ruleset.
