This must be an SEO trick On some of the bigger blogs. I've seen the owner of the blog actually comment themselves referencing the same blog topic.

Is this something we should all do? Does it help with traffic?

What do you mean? Are you talking about the author of a blog writing other articles where it includes reference to other articles on his/hers blog or do you refer to the blogger commenting on his own article? Anyway, I think both methods are good for traffic and SEO. However to much internal backlinks are penalized by search engines.

I somehow catch what you are trying to say but not sure if that is what you mean in the first place. I think it's a great idea to generate internal links to all your sites. Let's say a visitor visit your site and leave some comments. You could reply back suggesting the person to visit your other page and inserting a link in it as well. That might work.

That works fine but there is a limit that the search engines have. Let's say you have x backlinks and y internal backlings. If y > x/3 then you have more internal links that allowed. The example above is just like that, not from real life, but the things go the way I mentioned it up here. It's not my conclusion. It's what a SEO smart guy said.

I only make comments on my blog when I am replying to someone who has made a comment. I've heard this is a good way to keep your readers coming back....they think you appreciate their comment, which most of us do.

To me, in order to make it simple, I would rather create an internal link choose based upon certain keywords and then link between pages. Yes somehow there's actually rules applied pertaining to the ratio of internal link to external backlink. I would leave it to the SEO guys to explain on this
