I have heard that all blogs have a no follow tag for comments, but I still see people commenting for backlinks. Plus I have tried it myself on a few blogs, and checked iwebtool backlink checker, and they come up as backlinks. Are they helping my SERPS?

There are blogs that are "dofollow" and blogs that are "nofollow". I don't know how this option is set, but that's the way it is. On many blogs, especially on the popular ones, or on the ones where the comments are promoted, the do follow option is enabled to encourage the readers to comment. "dofollow" blogs good for SERPs.

Actually by default all blogs are nofollow unless you get a plugin to change it to dofollow. The difference between those 2 is that one will allow google bots to go beyond the link while nofollow means the crawling will stop there. Nowadays surfers hoping to get backlink will search a dofollow blog and leave comments there hoping to get automatic backlink.

How we know whether the blog is dofollow or nofollow?
