Default Two Domains - One Ip

Hello everyone!

I've never met a situation like that one I am in now. Our client has two different domain names - a and b. The content is absolutely the same for both sites (we tested it changing the info on FTP - it resulted in changes on the both sites). But when we ping the domains - the IP is absolutely the same.

Maybe that would have been ok and I would not have asked for assistance, but the most interesting is ahead.

When typing in any of the keywords both in Yahoo and Google - you will see different domains on their SERPs. So, for word "X" - Google has results for domain a, while Yahoo - for domain b only.

I wonder how is that technically possible and what consequences can be of such a strategy for rankings in SEs?

Thank you in advance for your assistance
