Default Is This Redirect A Bad Idea?

I have an article on my main website that accounts for more than half of the site's traffic. The keywords for this article rank #1 in Google, so I get a lot of natural search engine traffic. The article actually has very little to do with the main topic of the website - it was just an interesting "how-to" that I put there for clients, but it has turned out to be very popular.

I want to start a new website just devoted to the article and a related service.

But I don't want to lose the traffic that goes to the existing page, or the links. I thought that I could do a redirect from the existing article URL to the new URL.

Do you see any problems in doing this? or is there a better way to do it than what I have described?

If you use normal redirect than offcourse it can harm you.Especially if the redirects happens within 5 sec .Better option is to use 301 redirect. This method can never harm your position.

By all means if possible, try to avoid doing redirect. I've heard countless stories based on actual experience saying that webmasters experienced considerable drop in PR after doing 301 redirect as well. If I were you, I would continue developing the current page and put links from other pages so that PR distribution can be equal.

I would advise you to have 301 redirect do not use normal redirect which have some delay and it might hurt.

Thanks

yes, 301 Redirection is the best way to do. 301 Redirect is the S.E friendly way as this one won't your hurt your site and its current ranking. This redirection is used to maintain all the current rankings pf your site

I would personally recommend against the redirect. It's better to have that traffic associated with your main site.

From my experience google hates redirects. They are too often missused... so I think any redirect will hurt you.

Yes, google and other search engines, really do not like redirects. My advice would be to just develop a section of your main site to deal solely with the article.
