Long Pages Or Many Pages

I plan to break up the content on of the content rich pages on a website in order to target some 2-3 word key phrases related to the primary keywords. Up to here the dos and do not are pretty straight forward, i believe. Increase keyword portfolio, target easier key phrases.

However, I am also targeting the primaries (single words).
Please do not give me abuse for this, it sometimes needs to be done.
My question is this:
Are several pages optimised for say 'historical widget artifacts' 'blue hairy widgets' & 'widgets of the 18th century' at all likely to increase the rankingof the other page for the word widget

ps I apologise for using widgets but i'mquite new to the forum and still like having ageneric all purpose noun
