Rep Power: 403 | | Links In Hit Counters I was recently doing some research on a competitor, and was amazed at the number of links they had.
Further research revealed that the links were all coming from hit counters placed on a variety of different sites. Keep in mind that these links are all coming from unrelated and irrelevant sites, but an unrelated link is still a link.
I dug further and found that a third party sells ad space on their hit counters. The way it works is consumers sign up for the hit counter and receive it free... because it contains a URL with anchor text to someone else's site.
I hadn't heard of this technique before, maybe it's from before my time, but it's working in a fairly competitive market, and is allowing my competition to receive above 50,000 links. Basically smashing the search engines over the head with a sledgehammer of links.
I'm not seeing this as a long term strategy, but I've become quite curious about it.
