For google, submit your sitemap to it.Use google webmater tools forcheck your backlinks.Because this is the best way to count something on google.

more reviews come back with more backlinks.

Actually you can't see all links on Google but it doesn't mean you don't have links at all....

You have but Google display on sample of links....Build more links...

writing articles are great. a couple of tips:
1) Make the title of your article a specific keyword you want to target. Google will pick up the title/keyword. I have some articles ranking first page simply by doing that.
2) Read articles submitted by other people that cover the same topic as your website and make legitimate comments at the end while leaving a link back to your website. They eventually are picked up by Google.
