A few other tips I've come to realize. Getting links for the second site is easier than the first. I simply go to the same source (for the second site) as I did for the first site. Also, if you write an article, try to make the title of your article the exact key word you want. Google picks up on the title. I have several articles ranking well (with zero links) simply because the title is a specific keyword and its on a big article directory. Wish I had known that earlier after writing a bunch of articles.

Another thing: Make a Blog about your subject matter (or two or three) and point links back to your site from your own blog. Be sure to submit a request to have Google spider your site. It might take awhile for that to happen to a new blog but eventually it will.
Or, you can go to Craigslist and run an announcement about your new blog and point a link back to your new Blog. Google will certainly find that.

(replace this address with that of your competitor) and you will see all the backlinks that go to that website.

Also, Google will give your site a bigger boost in rankings if you don't have a reciprocal link. This is because too many people have abused reciprocal link trading. To get 1-way links, post to blogs, blurbs, create a Squidoo and HubPages account.

I have found that the easiet way to get 1 way backlinks is to post to blogs. You can find several communities online that will allow you to post to their blogs to get backlinks, most of these also have different IP's.

I do agree that link building is not a simple work.
On the other hand, i would like to said that everyone will like to link with you if your site is potential and able to provide them a benefit. People who just concentrate on link building will always fails because ROMA not build in a day, site need a strong basis then only able to stand long.
Of course, everyone likr to find reciprocal link partners with high ranking sites, and most of them are fails. What can the site owner do is continue improve your content, if you have certain amount of visitor and getting famous, they will come back to you because your site now is in high value.
If you want to get more value, you must first have value.
