A link exchange is a confederation of website that operates similarly to a Web ring. Webmaster register their web sites with a central organization, that runs the exchange, and in turn receive from the exchange HTML code which they insert into their web pages. In contrast to a web ring, where the HTML code simply comprises simple circular ring navigation hyperlinks, in a link exchange the HTML code causes the display of link, for the sites of other members of the exchange, on the member web sites, and webmasters have to create such banner advertisements for their own web sites.

well i really don't know much. but i think when you visit one website and you will leave a comment on that blog. and before you comment they usually ask for your websites. and so you will have chance that they will visit your blog to in return. well people or visitors on the blog that you visited will see your link and will give you a chance for more visitors.
