Directories have been good sources of one-way links for a long time. It is a one of the easiest link building method especially for newer sites. But quality is still the name of the game. Some pointers in selecting the directories to submit to:

High PR - indication that Google sees some value in the directory.
Well maintained - listed sites are in the proper category
High Traffic - getting traffic could be minimal form directories, but majority are targeted
Kewords ranking high in SERP - Well optimized, shows that the directory is well-marketed and SEO'ed.

Which to avoid:
Link farms that pose as directories
Directories that require reciprocal links
Crappy ones with crappy sites listed

What are your thoughts? Care to add more pointers?

Most often Links farms and directories are difficult to explain. May be it is difficult to determine that thin red line but it will be better if someone can explain that. I myself don't know a much about link farms anyhow i have a valid directory lists. nay be this forum is not a newbie forum but is it possible that someone can explain link farms in more detail?

Link farm is a website which put all links into one page and dirrectories has diiferrent pages for different links. The directories are moderated and same niche links are in the same page while link farms just host any links with each other.

if put all links in one pages, the site will look messy. how it work? do you know any example?

Yes, some webmaster did put it in a page in their website that never show. If you are using blog, then i have no idea about that. What i suggest not to use too many link, less then 10 should be enough for you. That's what choose the good directories
