I think you're site's interesting, and a nice simple design too.

As for background colours... I think it depends on the website, as long as the colours go together. Overly bright coulours tend to look ugly though, thinks like pink, lilac or bright green.

Perhaps it is not the number of post is the matter. It could be the ads and other script you have installed on the blog.
